WHCA Webinar: Safe Home: Best Practices for Serving LGBTQ+ Older Adults Residing in Long-Term Care Communities in Washington State | AL/ESF/SNF

COURSE OVERVIEW

Safe Home is the an evidence-based training program designed to address the needs of LGBTQ+, sexual and gender diverse minorities, and racial and ethnic minorities in long-term care communities. Our skill-based training courses provide staff with the tools they need to be able to meet the mandate of providing person centered care in long term care facilities.  Our courses ensure staff develop specific and transferable skills that will result in more inclusive care for health disparate, underserved populations.

The Safe Home training program is open to all Washington State Long- Term Care Workers.

SPEAKER

Charles P. Hoy-Ellis, PhD, MSW, LICSW, is a clinician-researcher with a profound dedication to the LGBTQ+ community, delivering clinical social work services for over two decades. His research focuses on enhancing the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and communities, with a particular emphasis on midlife and older adults. Dr. Hoy-Ellis strives to develop culturally sensitive interventions that address the social determinants of health contributing to disparities in health and mental health outcomes. Additionally, he serves as the Training Coordinator for AgePride, facilitating trainings on evidence-based care practices for LGBTQ+ older adults. Furthermore, he directs the Interventions for Underserved Communities unit at the Goldsen Institute, which is actively piloting randomized control trial interventions for LGBTQ+ older adults experiencing dementia, drawing insights from the federally-funded Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging, and Sexuality/Gender Study.

Jessica Sowa (she/her) is the Training Assistant for the AgePRIDE Safe Home program. She is an accomplished social worker with a Master of Social Work in Community-Centered Integrative Practice. Her career began as a family advocate for a local school district, where she provided vital support to students and families while promoting equitable family engagement. Over the last two decades, Jessica has also played an active role in various LGBTQ organizations, including serving as the founding board president of an LGBTQ-centered all-inclusive chorus. Growing up in a family that runs an adult family home for adults with developmental disabilities, Jessica has a unique perspective on the challenges faced by families in need of long-term care. Her personal background has given her a profound understanding of the importance of providing compassionate and effective support to individuals and their families.
